Library Director Maria Gagliardi speaks with new Youth Services Librarian Jess Passananti about what she envisions for the library and what to look forward to this year.
Maria: Tell us about yourself and how you arrived at Palisades Free Library.
Jess: I’ve spent the past 12 years working in public relations and communications. When my family moved to Palisades in 2023, I became more involved in the local community and eventually found my way to the library. I’m honored to take on this role and build on the library’s legacy by expanding our collection and creating new programs rooted in the interests and needs of local families.
Maria: You have a young daughter yourself. Has becoming a parent changed the way you think about the role of the library?
Jess: I have a newfound appreciation for the role libraries play in fostering community, especially for new parents. When my daughter Carmela was a baby, I relied on group activities to get out of the house, connect with other parents and give her opportunities to discover new books, songs and interests. It can be intimidating to leave the house when you’re not sure how your child will act in a group environment on any given day. And to those caregivers I say: I’ve been there! Come to a program anyway! It’s not a surprise that a baby may be fussy or a toddler may seem distracted. They will learn by example in time.
Maria: Families will see you leading storytimes and programs throughout the year. What other programs do you plan to offer?
Jess: The best programs balance education and entertainment while encouraging genuine curiosity – whether through a book, an instrument, a craft or a new subject. If a child leaves excited to learn more, I consider that a success.
In addition to storytime on Thursdays, I’m now mapping out programming for the year featuring new experiences for all ages, with a renewed emphasis on music and STEM for middle-grade children and teens. We’ll also be offering more community service opportunities for Tappan Zee High School students through partnerships with local organizations. Plus, we’re in the preliminary stages of planning a renovation and expansion of the children’s room, which will give us more space to grow our collection and create an even more engaging environment for young readers.
Maria: Finally, what are you most looking forward to as you begin this new chapter?
Jess: The sense of community here in Palisades is genuinely special (I’m lucky to both live and work here)! I’m most looking forward to connecting with families to bring a community-centric approach to every initiative. Nothing makes me happier than watching a child or young adult discover a picture book, a series or a novel they love and I can’t wait to be a part of it every day.
