Roots: A New Animal Hospital

A spanking new veterinary practice opened in Tappan this March and licensed veterinarians Jason Chin and Amanda Olsen are eager to provide personalized, holistic care for your pets. The gleaming facility has all the bells and whistles; a welcoming entry, separate examination rooms for cats and dogs, an isolation room for animals with infectious diseases and a state-of-the-art operating theater. After years working for the Banfield Pet Hospital conglomerate, Chin, a Tappan native and graduate of Tappan Zee High School, wanted to open a privately owned practice focused on individualized care instead of a corporate bottom line. “We wanted to get back to our roots as vets,” says Chin, “and reclaim that personal relationship missing in the industry.” This means prioritizing annual wellness checks, vaccinations, dietary advice and prescription services over expensive surgical procedures.

Roots also works closely with Four Legs Good Animal Shelter in Pomona, New York to provide veterinary services for rescued animals. “We want to have a reputation that reflects who we are,” says Chin, “that we’re good people and that we care.” They provide discounted services for people working with rescue operations, verified fostering programs and other animal shelters. Roots is located off Route 303 in the newly refurbished shopping center soon to be home to a Lidl supermarket. They are not zoned for boarding or overnight stays, but work closely with other local animal hospitals should your pet need an extended stay. They are also considering the possibility of providing home care visits.
